ALL 5th-8th students are responsible for completing ALL assignments (both in class AND at home).

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS (Alphabetical by class name)

ART-THIS CLASS IS FULL.  This class will guide students in the development of their artistic talents. This is done by first teaching students how to acquire the visual perception of an artist. The individual style of each student grows as they explore a variety of medias, artistic styles, and techniques. Students will gain the confidence needed to express individual creativity.  Class offered to 5th-8th graders.

BOOK CLUB– In Book Club, the students will read grade level appropriate books, discuss, and do projects on based on these books.  Some of the projects could be written, some could be posters, some could be dioramas, some could be cooking activities, etc.  The teacher will assign and/or do different things for each book read and discussed.  Class offered to 5th-8th graders (NOTE: Different books for 5th/6th and 7th/8th).

Supplies Needed: Single Subject Spiral/Composition Book for Book Club only

5th-6th Books Needed: Books MUST be purchased by parents and brought to EVERY class!  Books may be purchased throughout the semester year as needed.  Siblings can share books.

COOKING– THIS CLASS IS FULL.  In this class, students will learn skills needed for cooking while cooking delicious dishes to eat.  Class offered to 5th-8th graders.

MISSIONARY STUDIES– This class will study about the lives of missionaries and learn how to reach out to our own community through occasional voluntary community projects.  Depending on COVID Status, optional service projects will be planned outside of COMPASS hours.  ***NEW MISSIONARIES*** Class offered to 5th-8th graders.

Books Needed: REQUIRED Bible, Books MUST be purchased by parents and brought to EVERY class!  Books may be purchased throughout the semester as needed.  Siblings can share books.  Books will include the following:

MUSIC– In this class, students will learn to play the ukulele while exploring musical concepts in a group setting.  Music students will have the opportunity to perform during the school year.  ALL 5th-8th graders will take Music.

  • Ukulele (NOT from Five Below) Check-out the options on Amazon and Wal-Mart.  They range from $25 to All-in-One kits priced at $70 and many options in between.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (P.E.)/TEAM BUILDING– This class will promote physical exercise through workouts, games, and team building activities.  Class offered to 5th-8th graders.

SCIENCE5th & 6th Grade– This class reveals the incredible intricacies of cells and organisms, matter and energy, astronomy, heredity, the nervous system, and the immune system.  This class will include fun and exciting experiments and science projects.  ALL 5th & 6th graders will take Science each day.

Books Needed: REQUIRED- BJU Science 6  Textbook (4th Edition) AND BJU Science 6 Activity Manual (4th Edition) (Siblings can share TEXTBOOK, but NOT activity manual. Purchase only one textbook per family. Purchase each child an activity manual.)

SCIENCE7th & 8th GradeLife Science surveys the structures and functions of living things such as plants, animals, and human beings.  All these concepts are unfolded as a quest to understand the life that God has created.  Case studies, lab activities, and questions help students think like scientists and see life Science from a Biblical perspective.  This class will include experiments and science projects.  ALL 7th & 8th graders will take Science each day.

Books Needed: REQUIRED- BJU Life Science 7  Textbook (4th Edition) AND BJU Life Science 7 Activity Lab Manual (4th Edition) (Siblings can share TEXTBOOK, but NOT activity lab manual.  Purchase only one textbook per family. Purchase each child an activity lab manual.)

SPANISH– An introduction to basic Spanish.  This year’s topic will be “Verbos” which translates to “Verbs”.  Class offered to 5th-8th graders.

  • Index Cards with box to store cards OR ring to keep cards together

Books Needed: REQUIRED Spanish for You $20 (To be paid at Meet the Teacher Night- separate check from September tuition.)

STORY OF THE WORLD VOLUME 15th & 6th Grade– This class will study The Ancient Times: From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor.  ALL 5th & 6th graders will take Story of the World History each day.

Books Needed: Textbook REQUIRED- Story of the World Volume 1 (Siblings can share.  Purchase only one per family.)

U.S. HISTORY7th & 8th Grade– This class will have a basic overview of US History from the beginning to present times.  The class will use the curriculum America, the Beautiful (2nd Edition) by Notgrass, but books will not be required.  ALL 7th & 8th graders take US History each day.

WRITING5th & 6th Grade– This class will provide daily assignments and includes vocabulary words and literature suggestions.  Structure and Style for Students brings a successful solution to your child’s writing assignments.  (Based on IEW Structure & Style Year 1 Level B Curriculum)  ALL 5th & 6th graders take Writing each day.

Books Needed: IEW Structure & Style Year 1 Level B (Binder & Student Packet)

WRITING- 7th & 8th Grade– Using the first three novels of The Chronicles of Narnia, this class will help students learn to integrate IEW techniques with topics from the Narnia stories.  Siblings can share novels, but NOT student book.  Purchase each child a student book.  ALL 7th & 8th graders take Writing each day.
