Class Descriptions

ART

To guide students in the development of their artistic talents. This is done by first teaching students how to acquire the visual perception of an artist. The individual style of each student grows as they explore a variety of medias, artistic styles, and techniques. Students will gain the confidence needed to express individual creativity.

Cooking - Nutrition

To gain an overall view in basic nutrition and learn how to apply it to everyday cooking. This is a hands on cooking class.

Film Making

An introduction to film making. A study of how films began. Also, learning about the process of creating a film and working together to create an original film.

Hip Hop Dance

To build strength and endurance through hip hop dance. Hip hop is a very rigid, high-energy style of dance that requires stamina and strength, both of which students will gain through the class. There will be a small performance each semester.

Supply fee: $5 per semester

Supplies/Suggested Attire: Leotard.  Modest, loose fitting shirt. Comfortable pants, jeans are allowed but discouraged.  Tennis shoes or jazz shoes.  Hair away from face.

Jazz Dance

American History

We will travel across our great nation, learning about the events and people that have shaped this great nation. We will begin with America before the Europeans and end with the present-day (the New Millenium). At the end of each unit, students will complete a short Quiz. This curriculum is both history and geography. It is appropriate for all middle graders.

Texas History

Using the texts A Creative Look at Texas History (For Middle School Students) and Stars over Texas, students will explore the great state of Texas through literature, creative writing, art, videos, and games.  Comprehension, sequencing, and vocabulary will grow along with their knowledge of the people, places, and events of Texas history. There are eight units; approximately 3-4 weeks will be spent on each unit. There will be some take-home (homework) assignments/projects and research paper near the end. During class, we will be completing graphic organizers/outlines/maps. We will also be completing art and creative writing projects, as well as some dramatizations.

Sign Language

To learn different units of signs (ex:. Family signs, school signs). To learn how to translate English into American Sign Language. To read inspirational stories about famous deaf people and learn about the deaf culture. To do a project of famous deaf people and their impact on deaf culture.

Spanish

This is an Introductory Spanish Enrichment Class for Middle Schoolers. Our basic curriculum with be La Clase Divertida and we will move at the general pace of the class.

Logic-Critical Thinking Skills

We will explore generalizations, inferences, deductions, fact/opinions, faulty/incomplete reasoning, thinkers/philosophers, and much more. Students will have the opportunity to apply reasoning & creative thinking through mind benders & games as well. This course is appropriate for all middle grades.

Guitar

he class will be for beginning guitarists. Students will be introduced to many aspects of guitar playing. Strumming and picking patterns, scale patterns, accompaniment styles, and chord progressions. There will be an emphasis on building a foundation of good technique and practice habits.

Supply fees: none required Supplies: Any guitar the student has will be fine. If students don’t already have a guitar to use or are unsure about what to get, I recommend an acoustic guitar for ease of transportation and minimal set up time. Other items to consider: Strap Metronome Tuner Case (hard shell case or gig bag to protect your investment)

Music Appreciation

Students will be introduced to the great composers and compile a time line for music history from the Renaissance through the early 20th century. We will also cover basic music theory (rhythm, harmony, time signatures, treble & bass clef). This class is great for students learning to play an instrument, but can also be enjoyed by those without prior musical experience.

Piano Lessons

Students will receive one-on-one instruction on playing the piano. Previous experience not required; open to pianists of any levels (beginner – advanced).

Supply fees: $15 supply fee covers books/CDs Supplies: Must have a keyboard or piano to practice on at home.

General Science-Apologia

Using the Apologia textbook, Exploring Creation with Physical Science (2nd ed.), we will take a grand journey through God’s Creation. Students will explore the world around them and what makes it work, learn about the inner workings of atoms, and travel into the universe through hands-on experiments and activities. Module Summaries will be completed in class so that the students can review each module’s content. This class is appropriate for 8th-9th graders, or those who have or will be taking Pre-Algebra. It is the last subject to be taken before entering high school biology.

Theatre Arts

The class will focus on basic stage movement. We will begin by discussing and experiencing basic stage directions and learn about the balance and levels that the stage has to explore, as well as other fun stage movement. Throughout the year, we will explore pantomime (acting with the body only), and in depth improvisation. Each semester will include an end of the term showcase for parents.

Basic Writing

Learn the basics of good writing, and also learn to enjoy writing and see it as a form of self-expression and communication with others. This class will introduce basic grammar, the basics of essay composition, and consideration of audience, tone, word choice and other basic writing skills.

Supply fees: Supplies: one hard backed, 1 inch wide, 3 ring binder with a clear plastic front and a package of wide ruled notebook paper.

Creative Writing

This class is for students who love to write. The students will use the Young Novelist Workbook provided by the National Novel Writing Month to write a fiction book or short story using each step of the writing process. We will also be keeping a writing journal, which would be filled out in response to writing prompts.
