<p><strong>Art:  </strong>To guide students in the development of their artistic talents. This is done by first teaching students how to acquire the visual perception of an artist. The individual style of each student grows as they explore a variety of medias, artistic styles, and techniques. Students will gain the confidence needed to express individual creativity.<br />
Supply fee: $30 per semester<br />

Class Time: 1 hour:</p>
<p><strong>Beginner&#8217;s Quilting</strong>: To design, piece, hand quilt, and finish with a binding a crib/lap size quilt. No sewing or quilting experience as a prerequisite. A detailed syllabus will be given on the first day of class.<br />
Supplies: A detailed list of supplies, quantities, and measurements will be given on day two of class. The student will need basic sewing supplies such as scissors, thread, seam gauge, needles and quilt batting and a variety of fabric.<br />

<p><strong>Texas History</strong>:　 Using the texts <span style="text-decoration: underline;">A Creative Look at Texas History (For Middle School Students)</span> and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Stars over Texas</span>, students will explore the great state of Texas through literature, creative writing, art, videos, and games.　 Comprehension, sequencing, and vocabulary will grow along with their knowledge of the people, places, and events of Texas history.　There are eight units, approximately 3-4 weeks will be spent on each unit. There will be some take-home(homework) assignments/projects and research paper near the end. During class, we will be completing graphic organizers/outlines/maps. We will also be completing art and creative writing projects, as well as some dramatizations.<br />

<p><strong>Character Development</strong>:　 Using the Bible and the　Bible study, <em>Godly Relationships and Choosing Self Control</em>, we will explore having self-control and being Godly in our relationships with others.  Historical figures exemplifying these traits, literature, &amp;　object lessons will be used to reinforce these traits.<br />
Supply fee: $5 per semester<br />

<p><strong>Dance Classes</strong></p>
<p><strong>Hip Hop Dance Class Description</strong>: To build strength and endurance through hip hop dance. Hip hop is a very rigid, high-energy style of dance that requires stamina and strength, both of which students will gain through the class.<br />
Supply fee:$5 per semester<br />
Supplies/Attire: Leotard. .Modest, loose fitting shirt. Comfortable pants, jeans are allowed but discouraged. Tennis shoes or jazz shoes. Hair away from face.<br />
Class Time: 1 hour<br />

<p><strong>Jazz Dance Class Description</strong>: To improve dancing skill by focusing on conditioning and technique. Jazz is a fun, high-energy style of dance that encourages confidence and a strong personality.<br />
Supply fee: $5 per semester<br />
Supplies/Attire: Leotard. Modest, close fitting shirt. Comfortable, close fitting pants. Jazz shoes. Hair up and away from face.<br />

<p><strong>Modern Dance Class Description:</strong>To build dancing skill and creativity through the exploration of modern dance. Modern is a unique style of movement that branches away from the technique and form of any other dance style. Students will gain a freedom of expression and individuality.<br />
Supply fee:  $5 per semester<br />
Supplies/Attire: Leotard. Modest, close fitting shirt. Comfortable pants that are easy to move in (NO jeans). Socks or modern foot-things are suggested but optional. Hair up and away from face.<br />

<p><strong>Guitar:</strong>The class will be for beginning guitarists. Students will be introduced to many aspects of guitar playing. Strumming and picking patterns, scale patterns, accompaniment styles, and chord progressions. There will be an<br />
emphasis on building a foundation of good technique and practice habits<strong>.</strong></p>
<p>Supplies:  Any guitar the student has will be fine.   If students don&#8217;t already have a guitar to use or are unsure about what to get, I recommend an acoustic guitar for ease of transportation and minimal set up time.</p>

<p><strong>Introduction to Sewing:</strong>Come learn how to sew! This Introduction to Sewing class will be geared toward the beginning sewer and will cover all the basics you need to sew independently.<br />
You will learn the following:<br />
Introduction to pattern reading<br />
Sewing machine and tool basics<br />
Fabric content and selection<br />
Constructing a garment<br />
Seams, interfacings, and pockets<br />
Creating a casing and a waistband<br />
Learn about buttonholes and zippers<br />
Different hemming techniques<br />
During the semester, we will make a simple tote/sports bag as well as a pair of pajamas (or lounge pants). Additional projects and skills will be taught as time permits.<br />
Supplies:  Pattern: Simplicity 2402 and 2481.  Sewing machine is required.  There are limited machines available but arrangements will need to be made prior to class. <br />
List of basic sewing supplies needed will be given out.<br />

<p><strong>Writing Workshop:  </strong>This Writing Workshop will loosely follow the model from Nancy Atwell&#8217;s book entitled In the Middle.  Students will work at their own levels and progress at their own rates, so all writing abilities will benefit.The focus for the Fall Semester will be narrative (with emphasis on personal narrative).  This genre will be used to engage the students in meaningful writing, create an idea list for future writing, increase their writing fluency, and take them through the stages of the writing process.</p>
<p>In addition to the Writing Workshop portion of the class, they will also create a Writer&#8217;s Notebook to encourage them to become life-long writers.</p>
<p>Grammar and spelling will be incidental during the editing phase only; they will not be the focus during the other writing process stages.<br />
Supplies needed:<br />
Composition Notebook (sewn, not spiral)<br />
Pencil<br />
Highlighter<br />
Blue, black, and red pens (other colors would be fine but they need at least 3 contrasting colors)<br />
Small pencil bag to keep those items in the classroom<br />

<p><strong>Robotics-</strong><br />
<strong>LEGO MINDSTORMS Education – </strong>Students aged 8 to 16+ learn to design, program and control fully-functional models. They use software to plan, test and modify sequences of instructions for a variety of life-like robotic behaviors. And they learn to collect and analyze data from sensors, using data logging functionalities embedded in the software. Activity packs are developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Academy and provide a series of real-life activities, covering topics within science, technology, engineering and mathematics.<br />
Supplies/fee: $5<br />

<p><strong>Science (General Science-Apologia)</strong>Course will be outlined as an introduction to the sciences. It covers topics like the history of science, scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology. Hand-on experiments are included, all using household items.<br />
Supples:  Textbook reguired <em>Exploring Creation with General Science 2nd Edition</em>    <br />
Supply fee: $15 per semester<br />

<p><strong>Sign Language</strong>: To learn different units of signs (ex:. Family signs, school signs). To learn how to translate English into American Sign Language. To read inspirational stories about famous deaf people and learn about the deaf culture. To do a project of famous deaf people and their impact on deaf culture.<br />

<p><strong>Spanish:</strong>  This is an Introductory Spanish Enrichment Class for Middle Schoolers.  Our basic curriculum with be La Clase Divertida and we will move at the general pace of the class.<br />

<p><strong>Speech/Communications Studies</strong>: To gain confidence (conquer the fear of or control the speech situation); To understand the impact of purpose, occasion, and audience on spoken discourse; To develop basic concepts in speech which include adequate loudness, pitch, variety, and varied rate, gestures, body movement, and eye contact; To choose suitable topics and organize them in a logical manner; To use standard grammar usage and mature diction which includes a clarity of enunciation and expression; To develop familiarity with activities such as impromptu speaking, group discussion and argumentation; To organize, develop, and support a chosen topic within a specific time limit; To gain familiarity with the role of communication in resolving conflict ; and To gain effective listening skills.<br />

<p><strong>Violin</strong>:  To teach using an individualized curriculum for children and adults that promotes self esteem building in combination with learning musical concepts. Even students as young as four years of age learn how to identify and correct their own mistakes. This technique encourages students to be able to practice correctly and feel empowered when learning new concepts and improves their self esteem. To adapt the curriculum based on the student&#8217;s age, prior music experience if any, learning style, and pace.<br />
Supplies:  A violin is required.  There are a few violins that are available to rent.  Arrangements will need to be made prior to class.<br />
